How to Plan a Destination Wedding in Santorini

Santorini is one of the most photographed places on earth for a reason: the whitewashed villages, the sweep of the caldera, and a sunset that turns the whole island gold. It is also one of the more logistically demanding places to marry. Here is how we approach it.

Choose your season carefully

The island’s peak runs from June through September, when the weather is reliable but the crowds — and prices — are at their highest. For weddings we often steer couples toward late May, early June, or September and October. The light is softer, the caldera walkways are quieter, and suppliers have more room to give you their full attention.

Design around the sunset, not against it

On Santorini the sunset is the headline act. Work out the exact sunset time for your date and build the day backwards from it: ceremony in the late afternoon, portraits as the light drops, dinner as the sky changes. Fighting the sunset — scheduling your vows for the middle of a bright afternoon — wastes the island’s greatest asset.

Understand the venue types

Broadly, you’ll choose between three kinds of setting:

• Caldera-edge venues in Oia and Imerovigli, with the famous view and a premium to match.
• Wineries and estates slightly inland, which trade the caldera drama for space, shade, and easier logistics.
• Beach venues on the island’s south and east coasts, warmer in tone and typically better value.

Plan the logistics your guests won’t see

Santorini’s cliffside geography is beautiful and unforgiving. Narrow lanes, stepped paths, and limited parking mean transfers need to be booked early and timed precisely. Build in buffers, arrange group transport rather than leaving guests to find their own way, and confirm accessibility if anyone in your party needs it.

Handle the paperwork early

Marrying in Greece as non-residents is straightforward once you know the checklist: original documents, certified translations, and a short lead time with the local authority. Start gathering paperwork months ahead — it is the single most common source of last-minute stress, and the easiest to avoid.
